FDA updates requirements for hyperbaric chambers

The Food and Drug Administration's adoption of new standards could create conflicts with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulations
|

The Food and Drug Administration has officially recognized the 2024 edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code, as the consensus standard for Hyperbaric practices.

However, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) still relies on the outdated 2012 edition of NFPA 99, which lags more than a decade behind the standards being adopted by other regulatory bodies. To ensure eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, compliance with the 2012 edition of NFPA 99 remains mandatory under CMS guidelines. These discrepancies in code adoptions may force hospitals to navigate conflicts between various NFPA 99 editions depending on the enforcement agency involved.
