NFPA weekly update: Jan. 27-31

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) manages more than 300 codes and works with more than 250 technical committees in its codes and standards development process. Below is a list of NFPA committee happenings for the week of Jan. 27-31.

Cybersecurity chapter public input

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is requesting feedback on a newly proposed chapter focused on cybersecurity for the 2027 edition of NFPA 99, Health Care Facilities Code.

Public input

The following standards are open for public comment:

• NFPA 12, Standard on Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems, 2027 edition. Public input closes Jan. 7, 2026.
• NFPA 12A, Standard on Halon 1301 Fire Extinguishing Systems, 2027 edition. Public input closes Jan. 7, 2026
• NFPA 600, Standard on Facility Fire Brigades, 2029 edition. Public input closes Jan. 5, 2028
• NFPA 2001, Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems, 2027 edition. Public input closes Jan. 7, 2026

Notice of intent to make a motion

Committees for the following standards announced their notice of intent to make a motion (NITMAM) periods will open next month. NITMAMs can be submitted from March 27 to May 8 for second draft reports of the following standards: 

• NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems
• NFPA 780, Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection System

Final ballots

• NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code. The committee released first draft ballot information for the 2027 edition, including the public input report, first revisions report, committee input report and final ballot. The ballot information is posted under the “next edition” tab in the “first draft committee information” section.
• NFPA 70, National Electrical Code. The committee released the final ballot on tentative interim amendment (TIA) No. 1809. The TIA ballot is posted under the “next edition” tab in the “other committee information” section.

Meeting notices and agendas

Three committees shared notices and agendas for upcoming meetings.

• NFPA 53, Recommended Practices on Materials, Equipment, and Systems used in Oxygen-Enriched Atmospheres. A notice and agenda for the Feb. 19 meeting is posted under the “next edition” tab in the “second draft committee information” section. The meeting will discuss the second draft of the standard’s 2026 edition
• NFPA 418, Standard for Heliports and Vertiports. Pre-first draft meeting minutes from the Jan. 16 meeting are posted under the “next edition” tab. The minutes detail discussion about the 2028 edition.
• NFPA 1082, Standard for Facilities Fire and Life Safety Director Professional Qualifications. The committee posted a meeting notice and agenda for its Feb. 10 meeting under the “next edition” tab in the “second draft committee information” section. The meeting will discuss the second draft of the standard’s 2026 edition.
