The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last month released an important update to its Energy Star national energy performance scale methodology for hospitals. The update, which was previewed in the September issue of Health Facilities Management, will help hospitals better assess their energy performance and make more informed cost-saving decisions, EPA officials say. The updated methodology includes data inputs for the number of magnetic resonance imaging machines and personnel and adjustments to weather normalization. Additionally, the 5-million-square-foot size cap was removed.
