CDC reports decline in ICU bloodstream infections

Central line-associated bloodstream infections declined by 58 percent in U.S. hospital intensive care units between 2001 and 2009, according to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report estimates the finding represents up to 27,000 lives saved and $1.8 billion in health care costs avoided.
